Sep. 22, 2005 - Discover the Zohrab Center at the Diocese of the Armenian Church in Midtown Manhattan
|
|
In the heart of New York City is a treasure trove of priceless artifacts, precious manuscripts, and a wealth of literature steeped in the culture and history of an ancient civilization. It does not lie undisturbed in the crypt of an unfamiliar archeological society, nor does it glimmer on display at a highly-frequented gallery.
It remains unknown to many and has caught the attention of the New York Armenian Students’ Association, who invites its members and guests to join us in unearthing it on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
The treasure resides within the Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center at the Diocese of the Armenian Church in Midtown Manhattan (630 Second Avenue at 34th Street).

NY ASA and NYU Armenian Hokee Club present: Professor Marc Nichanian to discuss testimony in relation to Armenian literature "ART AS TESTIMONY"
Friday, April 29 at NYU’s Kimmel Center
According to leading Armenian literary authority, Professor Marc Nichanian, “The time has come to review the whole effort to bear witness, from literate (and sometimes literary) narratives published between 1919 and 1922, to survivors’ memoirs published throughout Armenian literary journals, to narratives gathered in recent campaigns inspired by the methods of oral history, to testimonies written (or translated) into English.” Professor Nichanian will share his invaluable perspectives about the problematic of testimony in an evening proudly organized by the NY Armenian Students’ Association and the NYU Armenian Club on Friday, April 29 at NYU’s Kimmel Center.

GODFATHER TOM! Music from the Armenian Underground in New York: Gor Mkhitarian’s Second Appearance in Gotham
On May 2nd, the New York Armenian Students’ Association (www.asainc.org/newyork) hosted Gor Mkhitarian and his band at the Knitting Factory in New York City. Gor is currently on tour, promoting his second CD "GODFATHER TOM". It was his second appearance in New York from the start of his musical career. Last year the NY ASA and Armenian Network of New York and New Jersey had organized a similar concert also at the Knitting Factory. It was a debut concert for Gor presenting his first album acoustical "YERAZ". Like last year, once again the room was filled with fans and people who were interested in the "Armenian miracle". It is interesting to note, that the organizers counted many non-Armenians among the attendees. The whole action took place at the "Old Office" – an intimate bar with a stage and a hall at the Knitting Factory’s basement, which drew everyone closer to experience the true spirit of modern underground culture…

Looking Backward, Keep Moving Forward: Richard G. Hovannisian
On the evening of April 7, I went to St. Vartan’s where the New York Armenian Students Association and St. Vartan’s sponsored a lecture by Dr. Richard Hovannisian. The title of the lecture was also the title of Dr. Hovannisian’s recently published book, Looking Backward, Moving Forward. I attended a lecture by Dr. Hovannisian of the same title in Detroit this past September. I would attend again, if afforded the opportunity, and encourage any Armenian with the slightest interest in our heritage to do so as well.
