Fundraising Effort to Help Samvel Baghdasaryan

Dear Fellow Armenians,
In Armenia, few people have profoundly influenced and inspired others more than Samvel Baghdasaryan. Samvel is not only an important Armenian artist, but also a teacher and active participant at the Yerevan Armenian Open University, the Department of Fine Arts of the well-known National Center of Aesthetics educational complex (Link to PDF file of Samvel's work at the National Center of Aesthetics). Many individuals that have visited Armenia have had the privilege of being introduced to him, including volunteers from programs such as Birthright Armenia and Armenian Volunteer Corps, or those looking to enroll either themselves or their children in art classes during their stay. Through such interactions, these active Diasporan Armenians from around the world have cultivated friendships with Samvel that have continued to evolve long after the individuals have left Armenia and returned to their homes.
Unfortunately, Samvel has been diagnosed with progressive Diabetes and, throughout the years, has required several operations to maintain his health. Recently, he underwent an operation which has left him immobile since December 10, 2009. His story is being shared in order to request donations to assist with financial needs. The money raised will go towards paying for medical procedures and preventative care. The presence of Samvel is so very important to the lives of hundreds, even thousands of people extending beyond the borders of Armenia.
What is the most inspiring and admirable quality of Samvel, besides his artistic talents, is his compassion and duty to serve the youth of Armenia for more than 25 years, giving his life to the pedagogy of art education. Through his teaching of methods and disciplines the youth of Armenia have an opportunity to learn different skills in various art media (e.g., ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, etching and video-photo arts). Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Department of Fine Arts, which Samvel helped establish in 1998, is that the space not only accommodates children from the age of four to teenagers and young adults, but also Diasporan Armenians who join for various reasons and become independent students.
For the reasons cited above, the New York Armenian Students' Association is asking if you can assist in any way that you see fit. Included both here and at the end of this text is a Web link to a New York ASA PayPal page specially prepared for Samvel, where a secure online donation can be processed via credit or debit card. And, of course, your New York ASA donation to Samvel would be 100% tax deductible.
In closing, the New York ASA is doing whatever it can in order to give back, in some way, to a person who has given so much without condition, and the hope is that you can do the same.
Sincerely,
Executive Committee,
New York Armenian Students' Association
